SOLAR FAQ

Below is a list of frequently asked questions about Grasshopper, solar, and our Guaranteed Funding Program.

How does Solar power work?

Solar panels that harness the sun’s power to generate electricity provide clean power for homes, communities and businesses, and help cut global carbon emissions.

What is a feed-in-tariff (FIT)?

In 2009 the government of Ontario launched the Feed-in-Tariff (“FIT”) program as part of Ontario’s green initiative that included solar power. A Feed-in-Tariff (“FIT”) is a commitment by the government or utility to purchase electricity generated by renewable energy sources such as solar at a fixed price, guaranteed over a number of years.

What is the microFIT Program?

The microFIT program provides eligible participants to own and operate small (<10kW) distributed generation systems, such as your solar system, with a guaranteed payment per kWh for 20 years.

Who is the IESO?

The IESO is a government regulator that administers the microFIT program and oversees the payments to you. Your microFIT contract is with the IESO.

How are the generation revenue payments calculated by the IESO?

The payments are calculated based on the contract amount per kWh multiplied by the number of kilowatt hours produced and recorded by the Generation Meter.

What is a Kilowatt hour (kWh)?

A kWh is simply referring to the number of kilowatts sustained over a period. E.g.) 1kW produced for 1 hour = 1 kWh

What is a Generation Meter?

The Generation Meter is a second meter installed by the LDC to measure the clean electricity produced by the panels.

How many panels are installed?

The number of panels is dependent on the size of the system. Generally, 7 to 10 kilowatts which translates to approximately 28 to 37 panels.

What quality are the solar panels?

The panels we use are of the highest quality on the market. They come with a 25-year product warranty and have a life expectancy of 40 – 50 years. These manufactures are Bloomberg rated companies with high quality products.

Will the solar panels cause damage to my roof?

No. In fact, the solar panels will protect your roof from the elements and extend its life.

What’s the environmental impact and benefit of solar energy?

It’s big:

The average home produces 7.42 metric tons of CO2 per year and only 1.41 after going solar.
